This 6-week summer school is a great place to try individual taster sessions if you’re a beginner or get some individual personal tuition if you’re already an accomplished artist. This relaxed course will be designed ‘on-the-hoof’ as we will take advantage of any sunny days during late summer to paint outside or indoors as the weather dictates. It will take you through step-by-step through a range of mediums, teaching the most relevant tips and tricks for each. You can treat it as a taster course by paying an additional fee for any session you don’t yet have materials for, or you can bring your own materials. There will demonstrations and advice on various topics each week which you can choose to follow or I'm very happy for you to go completely off-piste and work with whatever medium you have brought with you that week. If you have time, why not stay for the whole day until 5pm and join the Artynoon session to continue working on what you started with more personal tuition from Kate and other like-minded artists.

COST: £285 for the course or £50 per session, plus any additional art materials as needed, includes teas & coffees.

Suggested  Course Outline

Week 1 - Drawing and sketching which will help with all future sessions. Bring: pencils, pens, sketchbooks and any additional drawing implements.

Week 2 - Pastels: introducing colour whilst drawing. You will need a selection of soft pastels, pastel pencils or oil pastels and some ‘toothy’ pastel paper.

Week 3 - Painting with acrylic paints: bring brushes, a minimum of red, yellow and blue plus white acrylic paints, a tear-off or staywet palette, water container and acrylic paper, canvas or canvas board.

Week 4 - Paint with oils: bring brushes, a minimum of red, yellow and blue plus white oil paints, a tear-off or wooden palette, zest-it thinner and jam jar, oil paper, canvas or canvas board.

Week 5 - Painting with watercolours: bring brushes, a minimum of red, yellow and blue watercolour paints, a plate or palette, water container and watercolour paper taped to a board or .

Week 6 - Mixed media or drawing from life: bring your favourite arty bits and bobs to mix and match, create and play! There is also the option to hire a model for one of the sessions,

Each week we will discuss the likelihood of painting outdoors and the preferences of those within the group will largely dictate the topics we decide to cover, so join us with your ideas!

Materials List

You will need to bring your favoured drawing/painting art materials (please see material lists on other course pages on this website for extra ideas). I recommend A4-size paper or canvas boards for ease of transportation if we decide to go outside; a few artist quality paints*; a light board and easel; a Staywet palette for acrylics; a wooden or tear-off palette for oils; a plate or plastic palette for watercolours; a small selection of appropriate brushes (rounds, a rigger, a wide flat for washes, fan brush**); palette knives for oils and acrylics; small pots for water and/or Zest-it thinner; HB or 2B pencils; eraser; kitchen towel; apron; baby wipes; a camera or paper ‘viewfinder’ for getting inspiration. Please wear old clothes and walking shoes, bring layers, sunscreen and shades (ever the optimist)… pack some waterproofs too! You may also wish to bring a portable chair or stool.

Suggested summer artworks

** For brushes I particularly recommend Rosemary & Co's Shiraz, Ivory and Red Dot ranges. Please ask to see the catalogue and the brushes I use as they are all great quality at reasonable prices and they last! There is a basic set of acrylic brushes that Rosemary & Co. put together for me. Please enquire if you would like a set before the course starts so I can order them in. 

* When buying paints it is always prudent to buy from quality manufacturers as cheap, student or academy quality paints can put you off the medium before you have even started. I would recommend buying professional or artist’s quality tubes from: Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney (Cryla or System 3 are good for acrylics), Sennelier, Golden or Liquitex. You will only need a small range of colours and they can include a warm and cool version of each of the three primaries ie. Cadmium Red, Crimson Red, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, plus Titanium White. You may also wish to add in some pre-mixed colours like Sap Green or Hookers Green, as we’re painting landscapes, and some of the earth colours like Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna or Burnt Sienna but working with a limited palette of just three primary colours plus white with be just as effective (and a lot lighter!).
